Metaverse Enters Judiciary System

Does it make sense for the Metaverse continuum in Judiciary System?

Metaverse Enters Judiciary System

Introduction

Yes, you heard me right! Metaverse has entered the judicial system, and it has been described as a historical event in the Colombian judiciary system.

On February 15, 2023, Wednesday the first judicial hearing in metaverse was held, and in the judicial proceeding, a lawsuit was filed against the Ministry of Defence and National Police was carried out in Metaverse,

Colombia's Magdalena Administrative court held a two-hour hearing during which participants appeared as avatars in a virtual courtroom.

Magistrate Maria Quinones Triana's avatar is dressed in black legal robes as given in the image above.

The First & The Earliest

This country is the earliest amongst worldwide to test legal hearings in the metaverse, In virtual reality, each participant is represented by an avatar to make the experience more lifelike.

Video of how this turned out is given in the link below,

And the participants quoted that it felt more real and life-like than the video call to certain sources.

They described the experience as more Amazing and more immersive than a normal zoom call. And on a normal call, many people turn off their cameras and we don't know what they are doing.

This raises an eyebrow we still wouldn't what they are doing as avatars since the avatars don't exact body movements of the participants.

Majistrate Quiones added that a case brought by the regional transport union against the police will proceed partly in the metaverse, potentially including the verdict as well. She did not rule out metaverse hearing elsewhere.

The above-given image are a few examples of the experience in the metaverse,

She also added that this is just an academic experiment to see possibilities, and where every consent to it, they shall continue to do further hearing in the metaverse

Critics and Conclusion

Although most of the legal hearings are moved to Google Meets and zoom post-pandemic, few have experimented with the metaverse space as well, A space where Tech giants like Meta & Microsoft are in a race against each other to build an empire of their own,

Although it's just an experiment, this raised some fumes of rage and hate amongst XR enthusiasts and the Metaverse community, that this doesn't have a tangible use case as of now and is a complete waste of time and resources, which I agree with as well.

A particular comment/critic got me, imagine being sentenced to life or death by Roblox or Wii X Lego-looking character Lol!
